Obsession With Certain Professions By Indian Parents

It is a pretty common misconception in our society to believe that only engineering and medicine are the two professions that you can send your kids for higher education. Most parents force this in their children saying that you can easily “settle” your life if you get into engineering after your +2. But what does this do to the children?

How did it all begin in the first place? Well this was mainly due to the change in dynamics of Indian society after the British occupation. Most of India was into art and culture before that but after the British colonization those spheres of activity slowly dwindled and as the demand increased due to industrialization the manufacture Industry grew and this led to an increase in the workforce of industry based jobs. Medicine on the other hand was a universally accepted profession so it was always there. These days it is reputable for any parent to say that her son or daughter is studying medicine.

But they don’t have any idea what this does to the psyche of the children. It affects them differently. Not all the kids have the same aptitude level. Some are not cut out for engineering. Some do not have the mental capacity to study medicine. But parents don’t understand this. Our society doesn’t let them understand this.

What society ought to realize is that there are a lot of other options for a student to pursue like journalism, law, filmmaking, business, etc and these courses offer a lot more than engineering. Some of these courses are deeply entrenched in humanity and they could be responsible in the overall development of their children but most elders don’t realize this. It must have something to do with the fact that they grew up like that. But that doesn’t mean they can expect their children to do the same, does it? So it is high time our society stopped forcing things on their children. That doesn’t mean they should be allowed to do whatever they want. But their talents should be properly assessed and they should be made to understand what they are good and in the decision to pursue a particular profession should be left to them.
