About Marina Beach

Located some 6km east of Chennai, along the Bay of Bengal is the longest beach of India, the Marina beach. It is also the second longest beach of the world, stretching from Fort St. George to Mahabalipuram. The 12 km long beach comprises of soft golden sand and a clean blue sea providing some of the best surfs. In 1880s, the then Governor of Chennai (then Madras) Mountstuart Elphinstone Grant Duff, beautified the beach gave it a facelift. Today it is Chennai's (Madras) major tourist attraction. Visitors flock the beach for its beautiful and memorable sunrise and sunset. In the evenings the beach turns itself in to a fair grounds where many entertainment joints and food stalls spring up along the beach.

Bathing and swimming is not advisable as the waters around the beach have strong undercurrents that flow close to the beach. But there are many other activities that you can indulge into, children can enjoy the pony rides while the parents can walk the spacious promenades and indulge in shopping around the beach. The road along the beach is dotted with beautiful buildings like the University of Madras, Senate House, Chepauk Palace, etc. There is a new light house located at the other side of the beach and several statues of Tamil scholars and some fine sculptures lineup the promenade at regular intervals.

The beach is just 6 km east of Chennai which is one of the metropolitan cities of India. It is connected with Air, Rail and Road to major cities of India and the International Airport at Chennai sees lots of foreign tourists during tourist season. You can reach Chennai by any of the modes and visit the beach and enjoy the experience.
