How to Reach Varkala Beach

India is well known for its unique beaches. Varkala beach, located in the south of India 'in the Kerala province' is a must visit beach for anyone visiting India. Varkala is just one hour drive from Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram) and centrally located between Alleppey and Kollam.

Varkala Beach and Cliff located a few minutes away from Varkala Town, which has a railway station, making it an easy destination to visit. Varkala is 4 hours drive from the nearest airport located in Trivandrum, so rail is the best way to get there. From the train station, one can find numerous rickshaws to transport you to the Varkala beach for as little as $1 (50 Rupees).

Varkala as Ideal Place for Rest 

Varkala is the ideal place for rest and relaxation. It is blessed with the most stunning sunsets, which are sure to soothing away ones worries. You can settle in one of many beach huts with a drink and watch the heavenly sun melt away slowly, like a blob of butter. Papanasam Beach, which is Varkala’s main beach, and also known as the destroyer of sins, divided in two parts. The tourist part is in the north at the bottom of the cliff. Varkala is the only southern coastal beach with cliffs, which have a wide range of water spouts and spars, making Varkala cliffs a national monument.

Varkala town has exceptionally pleasant telecommunication networks, several post offices and has over 10 private hospitals as well as government run nature hospitals. Varkala beach with is excellent railway facility is a hub town to many small surrounding towns. Varkala has become a well known tourist destination as it is a sun-bathing and swimming paradise, furnished with multiple small restaurants and snack shops. The beach is also home to many healing Ayurveda massage parlors.

Varkala as Religious Centre

Varkala is home to many religious centers. The Janardana Swami Temple is over 2000 years old and attracts many pilgrims, being a prominent  Vaishnavite shrine. Devotees believe that the Papanasam Beach water has a healing effect and can wash away sin. It is also the final resting place of Sree Narayana Guru, the philosopher and social reformer, who founded Sivagiri Mutt. Every year with exceptionally colorful processions, thousands of his devotees visit his tomb to pay their respect.

Climate of Varkala

Varkala has a pleasant climate, with an average summer temperature of 35 degrees, and an average winter temperature of 25 degrees. Round about June and August one can expect heavy rains coming from the south-west monsoons.

Apart from what Varkala has to offer, like the famous Varkala Tunnel, and it sacred temples, Varkala is centrally located for anyone wanting to visit, Ponnumthurut Island, Anjengo Fort, and Kappil Lake. Ponnumthurut Island is unique and beautiful and only a small boat ride away from Varkala. Anjengo Fort is a place of historic significance, and a pleasant place to walk around and explore. Kappil Lake is only 4 kilometers from Varkala Beach and offers excellent sightseeing from a bridge overlooking the tranquil water.
