A wave of violence killed 111 people across Iraq last week. Officials say that at least 235 people were wounded in 28 different attacks launched across 19 cities, shattering a relative calm prevailing during the holy month of Ramadan. This shows that the west is not the only victim of Islamic violence, it also targets other Muslims. In Syria hundreds are killed daily. But if it were due to a reaction to Western injustice, then how do they explain the injustice carried out against fellow Muslims. Violence unfolding  in Palestine between their own groups like Hamas and Fatah, is that really the result of Israeli cruelty? When they inflict harm and evil on their own brethren, how can they blame the Western world and Israel for all their woes?

Terrorism is committed by a few Muslims for the purpose of achieving varying political and religious ends. They attack and murder those that they feel are a threat to their aims. God has never given permission to do so. Those going about killing and maiming innocent  people in the name of religion are, in fact, not Muslims. What is unfortunate is that these condemnable acts committed by a few misguided individuals has led to the vilification of an entire community and changed the way the world perceives it. Wars have broken out, and countries demolished, as a consequence.

These miscreants are not sparing even the month of Ramadan, which in fact, has to be completely dedicated to virtues like charity, making peace, tolerance and forgetting hostility, along with other religious activities. Scholars say that Islamic terrorism is caused by certain isolated groups that misinterpret the Qur'an, reading it without life and soul. Islam is a religion that calls for peace and rejects violence and hostility. 

On the one hand, peace loving Muslims, the world over should not be held responsible for the small minority of brain washed radicals dedicated to violence.There are many peaceful Muslims who are educated, moderate and do not agree with such terrorist activities. But, more importantly, on the other hand the Islamic community should confront the terrorists in their midst with words and deeds and oppose their interpretations of Islam. All Muslims should distance themselves from such people. The new generations of moderate Muslims in the world must take the lead to try and separate themselves from negative perceptions and demonstrate the inherent peaceful and tolerant real Islamic tradition through their behavior to fellow human beings.

Every Muslim must set an example and represent a culture of peace which respects the dignity and rights of every citizen.
