Know More About Thiruvananthapuram City

 

Thiruvananthapuram is the home of several educational institutions and center of various central state government offices. Thiruvananthapuram is called the capital city of Kerala.  City gets its name from the Malayalam word - Thiru – anantha – puram, meaning the city of Lord Anantha. The main deity of Sree  Padmanabha  swamy temple is 18 feet long deity, “Lord Vishnu” lying on a serpent called Anantha.  The temple is considered as the richest temple in the world. The temple situated at the heart of Thiruvananthapuram is the main attraction of the city. Devotees coming to the temple from various parts of our country are increasing day by day.

The golden age of the city is during the reign of Maharaja Swathi Thirunal. There are many tourists destination in or near the city including Kovalam beach, Shankumugham beach, Agastyarkodam peak, Neyyar Wild life sanctuary, Neyyar dam, Kuthiramalika palace, Ponmudi , Poovar beach etc.  The major landmarks include offices like Indian Space Research Organisation, Vikram Sarabhai Space Center, Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanical garden and Research institute, Central Tuber Crops Research Institute, Technopark and Rajiv Gandhi Center for Biotechnology, Secretariat and Medical College etc.

Indian Space Research Organization: 

It is the first university in Asia fully dedicated to study and research of outer Space located at Valiamala in Thiruvananthapuram. It offers undergraduate (B. Tech), masters’ degree and Ph.D. programs in Space science and technology. Complete lodging and boarding are inside the campus.

Vikram Sarabhai Space Center is a major space research center of Indian Space Research Organization. It is center for development of satellite launch vehicles.

Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic garden and Research Institute: 

This institute undertakes research in Biotechnology, Microbiology, Plant taxonomy and Conservation Biology. It is located in Palode. It is formerly known as Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute,   was established in 1979. The institute has been playing a major role in conserving all those precious and threatened plant species like medicinal plant, spices, orchids, bamboos etc.

KSRTC bus Terminal Complex:

It is located opposite to Thiruvananthapuram Railway Station at Thampanoor. It covers an area of 7.41 acres is the proud of the city. The work started on 2010 and was opened to public on 2014. It is a 12 storied complex with multilevel parking area. It is considered as the biggest bus stand in Kerala. Most of the floors inside the terminal are marked for commercial purpose.
