Jamai – it is a Bengali word, in English it means son-in-law and sasti means an occasion. So it is clear that jamaisasti is an occasion or program relating son-in-law. Mainly it is a Bengali program but in many other areas it is done with great enjoyment. It happens in May or June which is jaisthya in Bengali months.

Mother in law invites her son in law on this special day with family. So daughter and grandchildren also come. Mainly it is the festival of food. Mother prepares many delicious items and serves it to son in law. Some popular and common dishes are hilsa, meat, biriyani etc. It depends also on the culture and financial position. Sweet is also a common item. Various types of sweets are also served. Some of them are hand made and some are purchased. Fruits are also common. Different types of fruits are brought and mango, lichi are famous. Himsagar mango is famous this type and it is available also in this season.

Mother in law worship to Laxmi and Narayana wants prosperity of Son in law and his family. Many times Mother gives some new cloths to them and Jamai also gifts saree to his mother in law. So this type of occasion has a great importance. It increases the bonding among this relationship. It carries a great happiness to all of the family. Some times many people can not go to their father in laws house even once in a year but on this day they must go and enjoy.  In another hand many people have no such practice but they also celebrate it as it brings happiness. Family get-together has a great importance during this period of nuclear era.

It has some disadvantages also. Many times and to many people it brings some financial pressure as it is a costly program. In other hand it is celebrated in summertime. Caring about health is also necessary. So enjoy this festival with care. It may be celebrated in any day during the year as it has some other names also. At last enjoyment is also necessary in life.( Some terms used in Bengali)
