Internet Addressing - 3

Rules of IP Addressing

Previously we know about the classes of IP addresses. Now there are some standards that are followed by everyone. One and first rule of these guidelines is that no IP address should start from 0 or 255. There are some IP addresses that are reserved for predetermined tasks. The IP address can be categorised in following classes.

  • Network Addressing
  • Loopback Addressing
  • Special – Case Source Addressing
  • Broadcast Addressing

Network Addressing

This defines the physical network over internet in which various networks connected with different protocols to make it one big network.

Loopback Addressing

These addresses test the application based on web and network connection. The 127 ID number is reserved for such addresses. These types of addresses are in standard form looks like 127.0.0.0.

Special-Case Source Addressing

These types of addresses have 0 in all the octets like 0.0.0.0. When system boots up, IP address is obtain by node using the special- case source address, because node doesn’t have permanent IP address on network.

Broadcast Addressing

Frames are transmitted to the host on network through broadcast addresses. For sending a broadcast message the value of host or network ID is specified as 255. This is further divided in two categories:

  • Limited Broadcast
  • Directed Broadcast
  • Subnet Directed Broadcast
  • All Subnet Directed Broadcast

In case of limited broadcast, it is limited to physical network and used by host. A number of purposes can be resolved using this approach like obtaining the IP address at the time of system boot up. The limited broadcast address is 255.255.255.255. In case of directed broadcast, it transmit frames to host on particular network, which results to ensure that main network should not block due to the traffic of transmitted frames. In this type of addresses, the value of host ID is reserved as 255. For example, we can consider the network ID 137.169.0.0. By specifying the IP address 137.169.255.255; this network ID can be changed into Directed broadcast ID. In case of Subnet directed broadcast, it sends broadcast inside single subnet of a network. On the other hand all subnet directed broadcast sends it to all the subnets of a network.
