I Often Wonder With R.D.Burman's Creations!

R.D.Burman – one among the blessed names of Indian cinema who has given unparallel contributions to Indian cinema. He was one among those rare music composers who connected past with future and westernized Indian tunes, though had to face criticisms. I feel, among all music directors of the past, he is the person whom the present talks a lot and his tunes has been reused continuously for movies as well as remixes, thus proving that he was a composer who has rose above times!

Born as the son of the versatile music director S.D.Burman, music was in his veins and he debut Bollywood as assistant director for almost all directors during early 60’s. His first project as individual music director was crime suspense thriller ‘Teesri Manzil’ of 1966, starring Shammi Kapoor and Asha Parekh. Though his songs became smash hits that time including Oh mere sonare and Oh hassena, he was also criticized that he westernized Indian classical music. But truth is that he was most popular among youth. Though he was criticized so, the melodious number, ‘Tum ne mujhe dekha’ was a solid proof that he gave preference to classic and melody than western tunes. It was well proved when he completed many unfinished projects of his father during late 60’s and early 70’s, and he didn’t take its credit too. It was once rumored that block buster songs of Aradhana sung by Kishore Kumar, Mere sapnom ki rani and Roop tera masthana were originally composed by Burman da. It may be true or not, but he was the person who recorded those songs with Kishore when his father wanted Rafi to sing for him. Thus began the success trio Burman da – Rajesh Khanna – Kishore Kumar during early 70’s.

During 1969, he has also composed songs for Pyar ka mauam – Tum bin, Nisulthana re and Na jaa were quiet popular that time, thus telling to the whole world that 1970’s is exclusively reserved for R.D. music. It proved right too. From pop numbers of Sholay and Hare Rama Hare Krishna to melodious numbers of Aap ki kasam, Mere mehbooba and Ghar, we witnessed R.D. in full swing, experimenting with both pop as well as classics. Classical songs of Nischay were solid proof for his classical base.

Before I leave let me just mention my favourites composed by R.D. Yaadom ki baraat, Izzazat, Teesri Manzil, Andaaz, Caravaan, Amar Prem, Gol maal, Sanam tere kasam, Yeh waada raha, 1942 A love story and Aandhi.
