Do You Know About Blood Sugar?

Blood glucose or blood sugur refers to sugar that is carried through the bloodstream to provide energy to the cells in our bodies. The sugar is prepared from the foodstuff we eat. The blood glucose levelsare regulated by our body so that they are neither very low nor very high. For our bodies to function, sustaining a state of equilibrium or stability in the blood's internal situation (homeostasis) is essential.

Using the word "sugar" when we say "blood sugar" is an everyday term and is not correct. Glucose, the type of sugar that is carried in our bloodstream provides energy to the cells and is important to us. Sugar is an edible carbohydrate, simple and crystalline, and appears in a range of sweet forms. Carbohydrates are digested into glucose by our body. Thus a simple sugar is easily converted into energy.

Our digestive system splits the carbohydrates from the food we eat into a variety of sugar molecules and one of such molecules is glucose, the body's most important basis of energy. Once we have consumed and digested food, the glucose goes into the blood stream directly from the digestive system. Glucose can go through the cells only if there is insulin in the bloodstream. The cells would starve without any insulin.

Blood sugar concentrations rise after we eat. To enable glucose to enter the cells, the pancreas releases insulin automatically.  The level of blood sugar comes down to normal again when the cells get more glucose. Surplus glucose is stored as glycogen in the muscles and liver. When you have not eaten for some time, the concentrations of blood glucose keep dropping.  At that point, the pancreas releases a hormone by name glucagon.

The blood glucose levels are pushed back to normal by Glucagon when it activates the splitting of glycogen into glucose. So how is blood glucose levels measured? Blood glucose or blood sugar is abbreviated terms for blood glucose level or blood sugar concentration.  The levels of blood glucose rise and fall right through the day.  Our blood glucose levels rise after each meal. It settles down after about an hour.
