If someone asks which pair holds world record of pairing maximum movies together, the answer is Prem Nazir – Sheela Jodi of Malayalam movies who acted together in 107 movies. If it is the question of Bollywood movies, the answer is Dharmendra – Hema Malini pair. They have been paired in 42 movies together according to reports, the record for any Bollywood pair. Surprisingly they are real life couple too. During one such pairing, they fell in love with each other and got married each other. It was during the shooting of historic movie ‘Sholey’ and it was almost the same time when Hema Malini rejected Sanjeev Kumar’s proposal. She even asked the director of the movie Sholay, Ramesh Sippi not to cast her in any scene with Sanjeev Kumar. Despite being married with Prakash Kaur, Dharmendra decided to tie the knot with Hema Malini. As he was not willing to divorce his wife, he and Hema Malini got converted to Islam and got married. It was what happened in 1980.

Hema Malini was paired most successful with Dharmendra. Some of their hits include Sholay, Sita aur Gita, Charas, Pathar aur paayal, Raja Jaani, Dil ka Heera, Sharafat, Naya Zamana, Jugnu, Dillagi, Azaad, Tum hassen mein jawan and Dost. Dream girl – the name with which she was known later can also be included among top movies of Dharmendra – Hema Malini pair though the movie flopped at box office. Pratigya, Azaad, Maa, Kinara and The burning train are a few more movies belonging to this success pair.

Though they were seen frequently paired before marriage, they have worked only in a few movies post marriage. Razia Sulthana is one such woman centric movie in which Hema Malini plays the role of a princess who falls in love with a servant. Dharmendra was given black colour make up to justify that role. Though the movie was critically well acclaimed it failed at box office. They also worked together in Bhagavat, Samraat and Ali baba aur challis chor after 1980, i.e. after their marriage. Ali baba aur challis chor was success at box office.

Most of their hit movies belong to the era of 70s and in most of such movies, she was placed as a glamour girl. Isha Deol and Ahana Deol are the kids of this lovely couple and Isha Deol has worked in a few movies, though not as successful as her parents.
