Vijay started his career as a child artist in the Tamil films and made his reentry in the mature role through the 1992 film Naalaya Theerpu. He is not only an actor but also a playback singer. Many of his romantic comedies and action films went on to be blockbusters. Performing the same type of role again and again made his movies boring at one point marking a temporary setback. So he changed his moves and is trying to present different types of characters.

The romantic comedy Ghilli is one of his successful films. He played the part of Velu, the Kabadi player. Due to circumstances, he is forced to give refuge to a girl named Dhanalakshmi in his house and his attempts to hide her bring waves of laughter. The character of Dhanalakshmi is played by Trisha, who is running to escape from Muthupandi who loves her dearly and wants to marry her. She dislikes him and loves Velu instead. Finally the enemies are defeated and Dhanalakshmi comes back to Velu who wins in the Kabadi match.

Vijay and Asin perform the lead roles of the film Kaavalan released in 2011. Vijay name Bhoominathan in the film is sent to protect Asin named Meera. Meera has a friend called Madhu. Meera calls Bhoomi over phone and tells him her love hiding her identity. Vijay also starts to love her not knowing who the real person is. At a critical situation, Meera makes Vijay believe that the girl he loves is Madhu and so both are married. Meera remains unmarried and Madhu dies soon after giving birth to a baby boy named Siddharth. Siddharth learns the truth by reading the diary of his mother and takes his father to meet Meera. Meera and Bhoomi are finally united giving a happy ending to the story.

The fan base of Vijay expanded after the release of his classical film Kadhalukku Mariyadhai. In that film, he is a Hindu named Jeevanandhan and Shalini is a Christian named Mini. Both fall in love and had to face resistance from both the families. At one point, Mini’s brothers along with henchman try to kill Jeeva and so they both take refuge at the fisherman hamlet. The register marriage is arranged urgently but on the eve of the marriage they both realize the affection of their parents and leave one another to join with their families. Both of them are grief stricken and their mothers understand their hearts and thoughts and help them to unite.

The film Nanban is the remake of the Hindi film 3 Idiots and this brought back Vijay name and fame and his lost glory. This is a comedy drama of three friends, the two others being Jeeva and Srikanth. They study in an engineering college and have different dreams. The story says how each one of them accomplishes his dream. Sathyaraj is the college principal named Virumandi. The students call him Virus and he tries to belittle Vijay but understands his intelligence in the end. Another boy Srivatsan humiliated by these friends challenge them to meet after few years with success. Srivatsan becomes a successful engineer in US and is in search of the prospective scientist Kosaksi Pasapugazh. He finds Vijay to be a school teacher and gets his signature in the declaration of defeat. When the truth that Vijay is the Kosaksi Pasapugazh he is searching for is revealed he bent down on his knees to beg his favor and the film ends with laughter. This film made Vijay famous again making Vijay photos and Vijay videos the most sought after ones.
