Tabu is one of the talented actresses of Bollywood and her full name is Tabassum Hashmi. She belongs to an educated Muslim family of Hyderabad. As her parents divorced at her young age, she grew under the care of her maternal grandfather and grandmother. She got good name for her best performances in the low budget films. She received critical acclaim for her movies.

One of the movies that brought out her acting talents is Chandni Bar. Mumtaz is a dancer in a bar named Chandni Bar and she is forced into this profession to augment the income of her family. A gangster named Potiya enters her life and wins her love and both are married. She has two children, a girl named Payal and a boy named Abhay. Abhay is into trouble and was raped. The circumstances make him to spend his days in jail. Mumtaz who is then working as the waitress in the same bar, turns a prostitute to earn money to release her son. As she could not amass enough money, her daughter also starts dancing at the bar. After Abhay is released she could see a different face in him with full of vengeance. Tabu has played the sensitive role of Mumtaz who bears all the misfortunes in her life. The different storyline earned four national awards for this film.

Filhaal which means For the Moment is her best film that was released in 2001. She performs the character of Rewa along with Sushmita Sen who presents the role of Sia, her best friend. The film says how jealousy brings a split in their friendships. Rewa is happily married and settled while Sia turns down the proposal of her boyfriend and concentrates on her career. Rewa unfortunately suffers a miscarriage and becomes unfit to carry a child and this depresses her deeply. Sia could not bear this grief of her friend and offers to be the surrogate mother. When she bears the baby, the character of Rewa changes and she often insults Sia. After the baby is born, Sia gives it to Rewa and walks her way giving her consent to marry her boyfriend. The subtleties of human behavior are brought out in this film.

Tabu received critical acclaim for the film Cheeni Kum which opened with good reviews. Buddhadev Gupta is a 64 years old chef who is running an Indian hotel in London. This part was played by Amitabh Bachchan. He is full of love for a small girl in his neighborhood and remains a bachelor having his interest only in cooking. Tabu presenting the character of Nina Verma falls in love with Buddhadev and their age difference becomes the enemy of their true love. Buddhadev was six years older than the father of Nina and this tortures her father who takes up Satyagraha to prevent their marriage. Finally the love wins.

Tabu performed the role of a belle in the film Virasat, the musical drama that was released in 1997. There is a message in this film which says that the Indian people who get their education abroad should comeback to India to serve their motherland. Anil Kapoor opts to leave his village against the wishes of his father. But later he realized his mistake and commits to uplift his society. He marries Tabu and works for his people. This movie though did not create a bustle in the beginning slowly gained momentum to become one of the classic movies of Bollywood making Tabu photos and Tabu videos the most searched for ones.
