A.R.Rahman - Asha Bhosle Has Given A Few Magical Songs To Bollywood

A.R. Rahman – An Indian composer who westernizes Indian tunes and make it appeal to everyone, including child and old. Asha Bhosle – the queen of pops, cabarets and item numbers. How will their association look like? Just like a piece of red cherry on the top of an ice cream. That’s it! These two great legends of Indian music have given wonderful and magical tunes to Bollywood. When singing experience of Asha was powerfully merged with composing talent of Rahman, there born a new set of songs Bollywood has never witnessed or heard before.

During 90’s, Asha Bhosle was going through the bad phase of her singing career. New singers like Alka Yagnik, Anuradha Paudwal and Kavitha Krishnamurthy had gained momentum in the market and Asha’s voice was less chosen for leading young heroines too. In 1994, when her husband R.D. Burman passed away, it was almost the end note of her singing career. A.R. Rahman, a successful composer of south with songs Roja, Puthiya Mugham, Yoddha and Bombay was seeking for a breakthrough in Bollywood, when he met Asha Bhosle. He was composing songs of Rangeela, his Hindi debut that time and he gave the title track to Asha Bhosle.

No one, even Rahman or Asha might have imagined such a huge success of the song ‘Rangeela re’ and ‘Tanha tanha’ of the movie Rangeela in 1995, and the songs gave new life to Asha Bhosle’s singing career. Those two songs became the biggest blockbusters of the year, winning A.R. Rahman his first Filmfare for composition. As Asha Bhosle had already declined the awards years ago, female voice went to someone else.

Thus began a new era of association between A.R. Rahman and Asha Bhosle and all their combinations proved successful too. A.R. Rahman never gives more than one or two songs for Asha, but he has always taken care to give her the best. Also when the heroine lip-sync with Asha’s voice who has already completed 60 years, it never appears that someone else would have sung it better. Asha Bhosle had carried such compositions perfectly and that’s the reason why millions went to theatres to watch Urmila singing Asha Bhosle songs, ‘Rangeela’ and ‘Tanha’.

She has given her finest perfections in ‘Kahi aag lag’ of Taal for Aiswarya Rai, ‘Mujhe rang de’ of Thakshak for Tabu, ‘Mera dil ka woh shehshada’ of Kabhi na kabhi for Pooja Bhatt and ‘Madhupan mein’ of Lagaan for Gracy Singh. It’s also to be noted that all these compositions were dancing numbers, a little fast too and that’s the reason why A.R. Rahman put full confidence in this lady while composing those songs.  Other hit songs include Oh Bawra for Urmila (Daud), along with K.J. Yesudas, Mehrabaan for Shabana Asmi (Tehzeeb) and Dhua song for Tabu (Meenakshi).
