About the Alappuzha Beach

 

Rightfully referred to as the Venice of the East, the Alappuzha beach in Kerala holds an important in the maritime history of Kerala. It was the major port in India that carried out the precious spice trade and had trade contacts with Europe, Middle East and South - East Asia. The beach has a pier that extends into the sea here and is around 140 years old. The light house located nearby the beach fascinates the visitors, a must visit for those who are interested in light houses. 

 

Alappuzha is today famous for its snake boat race that takes place around the harvest festival of Onam, in autumn. Visitors are attracted to it for its houseboat experience that they get. It is totally different than what one would experience in the Dal lake of Kashmir. The house boats at Alappuzha are the reworked Kettuvallum. Kettuvallum literally means a boat with knots and the original kettuvellums were held together with coir knots. These kettuvellums were, in the olden days, used as barges to carry tons of rice and spices. The redesigned kettuvellums or the houseboats have all the comforts of a good hotel and if you are taking the house boat ride then your personal cook will accompany you to prepare your meals.

 

How to Reach?

 

Getting there to the Alappuzha beach is very easy and you enjoy the journey to this paradise. You can hire a taxi from Cochin to reach here and explore the surroundings, or alight from the train at the station and hit to your house boat for an out of the world experience. Alappuzha is around 85 km from Cochin and is well connected by Air, Rail and Road. The nearest railway station is Alappuzha. The Cochin International Airport is also well connected to the rest of the country and the world.

 

Where to stay?

 

You can experience the houseboat stay by booking one through the prepaid counter managed by the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC). This is a totally different experience that you will get. Else there are many good hotels around Alappuzha and some of them provide the facility of the renowned Ayurvedic Spas that the visitors can enjoy during their stay.
