About Chowara

 

Chowara is a beautiful village located at south of Kovalam.  Major attractions in this village are Aazhimala Beach Resort, Aazhimala temple, Vizhinjam harbor and Somatheeram Ayurvedic Resort. Kovalam has been the favorite place for tourists since 1930. The most popular attraction of Kovalam is the light house located at the southern part.  Ayyappan temple situated at Chowara is another landmark that attracts tourists and people living in the district. The temple festival is during the month of November or December. It last for seven days. Large number of devotees from various parts of place came on Makara Vilakh day, which is on the Malayalam month Makaram. On that day foods are supplied from the temple to the devotees who came to worship.

Aazhimala beach is near to Chowara.  The beach is less crowded, clean and beautiful. There are lots of Ayurvedic resorts near the beach. There is a temple in the name of Aazhimala. The road ends in front of Aazhimala Siva Temple. The temple is on the bank of the sea as the blue waters as the back ground of the temple. Viewing the beach from the temple is very nice. While standing on the temple we can hear the chants of mantras and the sounds of waves touching against the huge rocks. We feel we are lying between the nature and God. The temple is at the top of a rocky mountain. When we sit on the balcony of the temple we can watch the beautiful waves. Sometimes the waves are very close to us going back on touching our body. On the evening we can watch the beauty of sunset.

The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Shiva. The other deities are Lord Ganapathi, Nagaraja and Lord            Ayyappan. On every Tuesday large woman devotees offer Naranga Vilakku (oil lamp lit on a lemon) to please the God. If they have any desire in mind that must be fulfilled by the God if they offer naranga vilakku on every month.  It must be done on twenty one Tuesdays. Only women devotees are permitted to take this Vilakku. They chant special mantra while lit the lemon lamp. Annual festival is celebrated during the month of February or March.
