Napier Museum is a natural history museum established in the year 1855. In 1874, the old building was demolished and the construction of the new building was started and it was named after Lord Napier the then Governor of Madras. It was built of Indo-Saracenic style and has natural air conditioning system. It is noted for its gothic roof and minarets.

 

Napier’s museum houses the archeological artifacts and historic items including ivory carvings, bronze idols and a temple chariot. Sri Chitra Art Gallery having some rare collection of paintings is also within its premises. The zoological garden in this museum is the oldest of its kind in India established in 1857. It spreads over 55 acres of land.
