Local Transportation in Mumbai

People of Mumbai rely on the public transport system and avoid private vehicles due to high traffic, poor road conditions and parking problems. The transportation in Mumbai is provided by buses, private taxis, suburban trains and auto-rickshaws.

Transportation in Mumbai by Bus

The bus service is run by Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport and this connects all the suburban regions such as Navi Mumbai, Thane, Mira Bhayanadar, etc. The buses run from morning 5 till midnight. There are special seats for ladies, senior citizens, handicapped and expectant women and so traveling by buses would not be problem for these people. You can also avail day pass with which you can travel the whole day on all buses.

Transportation in Mumbai by Train

There are three lines in the suburban network and these are the Western Line, the Central Main Line and the Harbor Line. The Western Line connects Churchgate to Virar, the Central Line connects Mumbai CST to Kalyan and the Harbor Line connects Mumbai CST with Vadala.

The tourists can opt for the tourist ticket with which you can travel by any train in first class compartments all long the day. There are special coaches for women available in these trains. Mumbai metro is under construction and would be started soon.

Transportation in Mumbai by Car and Private Taxi

There are private chauffeur driven cars available in Mumbai. However the private taxis are cheaper when compared to these cars. You have to contact one of the cab services to avail their service. The cabs are clean, air-conditioned and equipped with GPS and tamper proof meters. You will be charged either per hour basis or kilometer basis depending upon the length and distance of the travel.

Transportation in Mumbai by Auto-Rickshaw

Auto-rickshaws are operated beyond Bandra in the western suburbs and beyond Sion in the central suburbs. The fares are moderate and cheaper when compared to cabs or taxis. Ensure that the meter reads correctly before boarding them.

Transportation in Mumbai by Ferry

The ferries connect the adjacent islands and they are operated by private operators. There are fast boats and Catamarans that connect Gateway of India to Elephanta Caves and cheap ferry services operated by BEST from Marve Jetty to Manori Jetty. This also connects the Esselworld Amusement Park. Other ferry services connect Versova to Madh Jetty and Gorai to Gorai Beach. All these are very affordable.
