The Writers’ Building is the secretariat of the State Government of West Bengal. The office of the Chief Minister is located here. It was built in 1821 and later many additions were made. It has 128 long verandah and they have big iron columns that are 32 feet in height.

Initially Fort William College was functioning here and later the building went into the hands of the private individuals and then was occupied by the East India Railway Company. In 1877 – 82 three blocks were added to it and in 1970 totally 13 blocks were constructed. It is one of the old buildings of Kolkata.
