Alipore Zoological is also known as Calcutta Zoo and is one of the oldest zoos of India. This was opened in 1876 and spreads over an area of 46.5 acres of land. Some of the species of animals found here are African buffalo, Zanzibar Ram, domestic sheep, four horned sheep, Indian antelope, Indian gazelle, sambar deer, spotted deer and hog deer. Some of the attractions here are royal Bengal tiger, African lion, jaguar, hippopotamus, reticulated giraffe, emu, camel and Indian elephant. The aviary in the zoo includes macaw, swinhoe’s pheasant, golden pheasant, lady Amherst’s pheasant, cassowary and ostrich. The zoo has the breeding house of white tigers and common reticulated giraffe.
