The charismatic Assam has within its environs a number of important places of note. Jorhat in Assam is one such place significant for the Indian tea industry. Spread with tea plantation over acres and acres of land, the emanated ambience is one of perfect harmony. Jorhat houses the Assam Agricultural University and the Regional Research Laboratory. Research work on various tea plants and herbs are carried out here. Jorhat has some interesting historical facts associated with it. It was once the capital of the Ahom Kings. The first tea garden Cinnamora Tea Estate was established here in 1850 AD by Maniram Devan. Today, though Jorhat still has some traces of the past yet it has paved its way to be one of the most cosmopolitan towns in Assam.  

The Gymkhana club erected to kill time way back in the year 1876, still stand in its former fame. Jorhat has the reputation for possessing the world’s largest and oldest tea research centre in the world. Named as the Tocklai Tea Research Centre and established in the year 1911, the centre carries out various tea cultivation and processing task. The centre also keeps updating the world about new knowledge in tea.  Another place of note is the Bangalpukhari, a tank situated on the southern region of the Jorhat city. The tank has a history that dates back to 1739 and which revolves around the murder of the cruel Ahom Governor by Rupsingh Bangal. There is an important Sakta shrine located at the heart of the Jorhat city and this shrine deserves your visit. There is also a vault of King Purandar Sinha known as Raja Maidam which conserves the ashes of the late king. Kunwori Pukhuri a big tank constructed by Parbatia Kunwori, granddaughter of Sataialia Dilabandha Borgohain can also be visited during your tour of the city. Other places of interest include the Garh Ali and Lachit Borphukan Maidam.

Jorhat can be easily reached through air, rail or road. It is well connected with the hub of North East- Guwahati. It is best to take the road as one can then take pleasure in the beauty of the lush green vegetations, emerald fields and hills hemming the border. There is an ambience of freshness and gaiety all around and you will surely be inebriated by the air of tranquillity.
