Transportation in Chennai by Bus

Metropolitan Transport Corporation runs buses all through the city. The government run buses are the cheapest modes of transport. Some of the important routes that the buses ply through are Parrys to Tambaram, Parrys to CMBT, Chennai Central to CMBT, Chennai Central to Tambaram, etc.

Transportation in Chennai by Suburban Trains

The suburban train system in Chennai is reliable and fast. This is one of the easiest ways of reaching your destination quickly. The fare is low and affordable.

The six lines of the suburban system are

• North Line connecting Chennai Central MMC, Ennore, Gummidipoondi, Sullurpeta
• South Line connecting Chennai Beach, Tambaram, Chengalpattu, Tindivanam, Villupuram
• South West Line connecting Chennai Beach, Tambaram, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Arakonam
• West Line connecting Chennai Central MMC, Tiruvallur, Arakkonam, Katpadi, Jolarpet  
• West North Line connecting Chennai Central MMC, Tiruvallur, Arakkonam, Tiruttani     
• West South Line connecting Chennai Beach, Royapuram, Washermanpet, Permbur, Arakkonam

Transportation in Chennai by MRTS System

The Mass Rapid Transit System is a new system to get around the city fast which is bubbling with traffic. The route between Chennai Beach and Velachery is operational and it covers a distance of 25 kilometers and has 21 stations. The route between Velachery and St. Thomas Mount is under construction. Apart from this Chennai metro with five corridors is under construction.

Many auto rickshaws ply around Chennai and they could be hired at any place. They have meters in them to calculate the fare for a particular distance. If you are looking for a cheap means of transport for short distance travel, auto rickshaws will pick you up at your doorsteps and drop you at the exact point of your destination. There are share autos which are slightly bigger than the regular auto rickshaws. They accommodate many people and stop at particular points.

Prepaid taxis and cars are available for local transport and for sightseeing. You can hire them for one full day or hire them based on the kilometers you intend to travel. You will be charged based on the hours. Chauffeur driven cars and metered taxis are common in Chennai.
