Viji Biography

Viji was a popular actress of Tamil cinema during 1980’s. She entered film world with directorial debut of music director Gangai Amaran with the movie – Kozhi koovuthu in the year 1982, opposite Prabhu. This movie became a blockbuster and she began to be known as 'Kozhi Koovuthu' Viji after the film. During 2000, this actress committed suicide and her unfortunate death was in news for a short time. It resembled the story and recent death of Bollywood actress Jiah Khan also, when her love was denied by a person related to film entity that resulted in the suicide at a younger age.

 

After the dream debut in the movie Kozhi Koovuthe in 1982, she was busy in the Tamil industry with movies like – Saatchi, Mr. Bharath, Kutravaaligal, Dowri kalyanam, Anney Anney, Raja Veettu Kannukkutti, Vetri, Sukradhisai, Satyam neeye, Valarthakada, Thooram Adhigamillai, Mookanankayiru, Karimedu Karuvayan, Marakka Mattaen, Dhoorathu Patchai, Ullam Uruguthadi, Eetti, Nalla Naal, Kattukulle Thiruvizha and Poikkal Kudhirai. From late 80’s onwards she moved towards supporting roles as well. She has also acted in Rajnikanth-Roja starrer Uzhaipali in 1993 in a supporting role.

 

While shooting the Vijay movie ‘Poove unakkake’ in 1996, Viji experienced hip and back pain. She had to undergo an operation of her spinal cord in 1996 at the Chennai Apollo Hospital. The operation was a failure and doctors found an acute infection in the wound caused by the surgery. Despite conducting numerous surgeries and treatments, she became paralyzed. She filed a lawsuit on Apollo Hospitals which returned Rs 30,000. After a corrective surgery, she get out of the temporary paralysis and returned back to normal life.

 

Her comeback movie was Simmasanam released in the year 2000. Actor Vijayakanth, who has worked in her numerous movies promised to give her an opportunity in his next film Vaanchinathan. But before the venture, she committed suicide.  She blamed director A. R. Ramesh for her death. He had earlier promised her a married life though he was married. But at a function, Ramesh abused her and this rejection resulted in her unfortunate death as well.
