Gangai Amaran Biography

 

Gangai Amaran is a famous film director, script writer and music director of Tamil movies. He is a singer and actor as well. He is the younger brother of noted music director of Indian cinema - Ilayaraaja. Actor/singer Premji Amaran and director/actor Venkat Prabhu are his sons. He is a well known scriptwriter as well, who has written scripts of numerous movies during his early career where Ilayaraja has given music. Karagattakaran needs special mention. This movie was a huge blockbuster and the debut movie of actress Kanaka as well. He sang the song - Ooruvittu Ooruvanthu along with Malaysia Vasudevan in this movie. He was given life time achievement awards in International Tamil Film Awards (ITFA).

 

He began to give music to Tamil movies in the late 70’s through movies like Suvarillatha Chithirangal (1979) and Ramaye Vayasukku Vanthutta (1980) before entering direction venture. His debut to Tamil movies as a film director, directing Kozhi koovithu in 1982. Music was given my none other than his elder brother Ilayaraja and this blockbuster had an assembled star cast of Prabhu, Viji and Silk Smita. It was the debut movie of Viji as well. After that he wrote scripts of numerous Tamil movies and directed as well, where Ilayaraja was the composer. A few of those movies are - Sarkarai Pandhal, Koil Mani Osai, Karagattakaran, Pozhuthu Vidinchachu, Themmangu Pattukkaran, Kovil Kaalai, Chinnavar, Devi Sridevi, Vellai Pura Ondru, Enga Ooru Pattukaran, Ooru Vittu Ooru Vandhu, Ponuketha Purushan and Villu Paatukaran. Among his movies, he has given music to Koil Mani Osai and Athai Maga Rathiname.

 

As a music director a few of his movies include - Nalellam Pournami (1986), Athai Maga Rathiname (1994), En Pottukku Sondhakkaran (1991), Needhipadhi (1983), Nichayam (1984), En Thangachi Padichava (1988), Jaadiketha moodi (1988), Pudhia Sangamam (1984), Pachai Kodi (1990), Ponnu Parkka Poraen (1989), Ramaye Vayasukku Vanthutta (1980), Adhikari (1991), Vamsa Vilakku (1984), Ponnu Parkka Poraen (1989), Suvarillatha Chithirangal (1979), Annan Kaattia Vazhi (1991), Kanna Thorakkanum Sami (1986) and Kudumbaam (1984).
