Veerankutty Biography

Veerankutty is a prominent environment poet associated with Malayalam literature in the modern times. An academician, he currently teaches at Government College Madappally. He serves as the Associate Professor in Department of Malayalam. Prior to his post at Madappally, he worked as the Head of Malayalam Departmentt at MEASS College Areacode, Malapuram. As a writer he has published several Anthology of Poems and Children's’ literature, and won many awards as well. Jhala Bhoopatam, Manthrikan, Autograph, Manveeru, Thottu Thottu Nadakkumbol, Veerankuttiyute kavithakal, Always in bloom (English) and Mindaprani are his published poetry collections till now. Undanum noolanum, Nalumanippoovu and Kunjan puli kunjan muyalaya katha belong to the category of Children’s literature.

He was born on July 9, 1962 in Narayamkulam near Perambra in Kozhikode District, Kerala. After education he started his professional career as a teacher. He gained attention as an author of poetry works. He published his first collection of poems in the year 2001 - Jhala Bhoopatam, which earned him K. S. K Thalikkulam award for his poetry collection. A prominent environmental poet of the new generation in Malayalam, Veerankutty has authored three volumes of poetry apart from two collections of stories for children.

A representative of the ‘post-modernist phase of Malayalam poetry’ that began in the 1990s, Veerankutty has been honoured multiple times. S.B.T Award, Tamil Nadu C.T.M.A Sahithya Puraskaram, Cherusseri Sahithya Puraskaram and V T Kumaran Kavya Puraskaram are the major awards received by him. Most recently in 2015 he received V.T. Kumaran Foundation Poetry Award for his anthology of poems, ‘Veeran Kuttyiyude Kavithakal’. Many of his poems have been included in the academic books of various universities of Kerala, apart from school books.
