Unni. R Biography

Unni. R is a noted writer associated with Malayalam literature at present. He has also scripted a few movies in the recent times. He scripted the highly acclaimed films – Munnariyippu starring Mammootty and Charlie starring Dulquer Salman. He earned Kerala State award for best screenplay for the movie, Charlie in 2015. He adapted Chinese author Feng Jicai’s work The Tall Woman and Her Short Husband to write the segment of Kullante Bharya for the anthology film, 5 Sundarikal. The segment was directed by Amal Neerad. He has earlier worked with the same director for the movie, Big B, which was a commercial success. Known for punch dialogues, his one-liners make him a star as a dialogue writer of movies, and often called – Punch Unni.

His recent work – Leela (2016) has also been appreciated by critics. He scripted the movie based on his short story with the same title, and the movie was directed by Ranjith. The story was earlier published in Mathrubhumi weekly magazine. Biju Menon played the lead role. Ozhivu Divasathe Kali is one among his best short stories, which won multiple awards. The story was later adapted to big screen by director Sanalkumar Sasidharan, which earned him the state award for best Malayalam film.

Unni hails from Kottayam, Kerala. His stories are categorized under postmodern. Many of his short stories have been adapted to big screen and he is one of the most sought dialogue writer and screenwriter of Malayalam cinema at present. His literary works include short stories and essays. He deals with heavy subjects on human nature and social behavior. As a dialogue writer, his best works include – Big B and Munnariyippu both starring Mammootty, Charlie, Leela, Anwar, Chaappa Kurishu etc.
