Swadesh Deepak Biography

Swadesh Deepak is a noted writer belonging to Hindi language. He writes novels, plays and short stories in Hindi since 1960s. Deepak is an accomplished playwright who shot to fame with Court Martial, a path breaking play staged in the early 1990s. He has also published many articles in several periodicals and till now published more than 15 books belonging to different genres. He published his memoirs titled Maine Mandu Nahin Dekha. He is also an English professor.

 

Swadesh Deepak was born in the year 1942. He started his literal journey at the age of only 14. His family settled in Rajpura Town following Partition of India. He witnessed the bloodshed of Indian partition during his childhood days, which left many imprints in his mind. His father was affected by tuberculosis due to intense smoke and fire and later one of his lungs was also removed. His family was taken care of by the maternal grandfather and he grew up in Ambala. He completed his graduation and Post-Graduation studies in English and Hindi, in Ambala and Cantt respectively.

 

He started off his literal journey as a short story writer and his initial works were published in Hindi newspapers. Lal Pheete Ka Tukda (1957) was his first published short story. He used the penname "Swadesh Bhardwaj" for his early works. "Santa Singh Ka Beta Banta Singh" – the short story published in the early 1960s earned him recognition. There was no turning back after that. He later published his stories in "Dharamyug", a popular magazine. Ashwarohi (1973) was his first published book on short stories. Later he published two novels too - Number 57 Squadron and Mayapot.

 

He tried the genre of plays towards the last phase of his literal journey. But it gave him most success. He published the play Court Martial in 1991. He rose to fame as an accomplished playwright after this work. Later he concentrated on plays and wrote Sabse Udaas Kavita, Jalta Hua Rath and Kal Kothari. Natak Bal Bhagwan (1988) was his first play.
