Sunil Gavaskar Biography
Sunil Gavaskar is a former Indian cricketer who was famous during 1970s and 1980s. He is considered as one of the greatest opening batsman in the test match history. He has obtained 34 Test centuries. His fast bowling technique is admired by all. He took part in the Indian team that won 1983 Cricket World Cup.
He was born on 10th July 1949 in Mumbai. He started to play cricket when he was at school that he was called as India’s Best Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year 1966. During his final year of secondary education, he scored 246, 222 and 85 runs. His first class debut was for Vazir Sultan Colts XI and then played for Bombay team in Ranji Trophy. His debut match was against Karnataka in 1968 cricket season. The former Indian Test wicketkeeper Madhav Mantri is his uncle. He married Marshneil Gavaskar who is a daughter of a leather industrialist in Kanpur. They have one son named Rohan.
He is the first Indian batsman to score 10,000 runs. His first and only century in the ODI is in the 1987 World Cup against New Zealand in which he hit 103 not out. He is said to be the technically correct cricketer in the world. He is the only man to score 1000 runs in a calendar year. He hit a century in each innings of a Test thrice. He got highest runs by a debutant which is 774 in a series against West Indies. He scored 4 consecutive centuries against 2 venues at Port of Spain and Wankhede.
He was awarded Padma Bhushan and was appointed as the Sheriff of Mumbai in 1994, an honorary post. He has written four books on cricket namely Sunny Days, Idols, Runs n’Ruins, One Day Wonders. His son Rohan is also a cricketer playing in Ranji Trophy. Sunil Gavaskar also acted in few films. He is involved in many controversies. He is criticized for supporting changes in the cricket rules that favor batsmen.
