Sujit Mukherjee Biography

Sujit Mukherjee was an Indian writer, critic, cricketer and publisher who lived during the period, 21 August 1930 – 14 January 2003. His wife Meenakshi Mukherjee was a writer and Sahitya academy award winner. She was also a great teacher who passed away in 2009. Sujit was a prolific writer on a range of literary topics, and translated many books from Bengali to English. He had an active career in first class cricket in the 1950s, and wrote half a dozen books on cricket. Apart from it, he authored several non-fiction books in English.

Sujit Mukherjee was born in Kolkata. Ariadaha was his native village. His education was completed in Patna, and later he took PhD from University of Pennsylvania. After studies he worked as a lecturer in many colleges for a few years till he joined Orient Longman in 1970, where he served as Chief Publisher until 1986. During his stint with Orient Longman, he published many books, columns and also served as an editor. He also translated a few Bengali books to English. He was suffering from myopia and for the same reason he used to wear thick glasses.

He was a cricketer who played for university, club and first-class cricket in the 1950s, and authored some books on this sport, which include - The Romance of Indian Cricket, Playing for India, Between Indian Wickets, Matched Winners, Autobiography of an Unknown Cricketer and An Indian Cricket Century: Selected Writings. Bewitched Veil, Gora, Book of Yudhishthir, Naked King and Other Poems and Modern Poetry and Sanskriti Kavya are among his translation works, apart from several non-fictional books on literature. Mukherjee also did radio commentary for Test cricket between 1975 and 1978.
