Subhash Chandran Biography

Subhash Chandran is one of the most accomplished young writers of Malayalam at present, who is best known for his debut novel - Manushyanu Oru Aamukham, which earned him Kendra Sahitya Academy award and Kerala Sahitya academy award, apart from Odakkuzhal Award, Basheer Puraskaaram, Kovilan Puraskaaram and FOKANA Award. He is the only writer to get Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for both his debut story collection - Ghatikarangal Nilaykunna Samayam (2001) and debut novel - Manushyanu Oru Aamukham (2011), and possibly the youngest author to receive the Sahitya Akademi Award for Malayalam for his debut novel. He is also the only Malayalam writer featured in the list of young Indian writers by The Times of India.

Subhash Chandran was born in 1972 in Kadungalloor, near Alwaye of Ernakulam district. He got first rank in MA Malayalam from Mahatma Gandhi University and since then he ventured into writing. He started off with short stories and won a prize in the Mathrubhumi Vishuppathippu (annual publication) short story competition conducted by Mathrubhumi. Thus his prize winning short story - "Ghatikarangal Nilaykkunna Samayam" was published in the annual publication. Since then he wrote short stories and novels apart from memories. Das Capital – is his memorial dedicated to singer Yesudas and his influence on Subhash as a music lover.

Manushyanu Oru Amukham – the novel published in 2011 is his masterpiece. The novel originally serialised in Mathrubhumi Weekly in 2009 was later released as a book in 2011 and remains a best seller. Four of his stories have been adapted for films. His short story "Parudeesa Nashtam" was made to a feature film ‘Laptop’ by Rupesh Paul, starring Suresh Gopi in the lead role. Perumthachan, Goliyum Valappottum, Bhoomiyammayum Makkalum, Theranjedutha Kuttikkadhakal and Pandu Pandoru Marthandavarma are some of his published books for children.
