Srinivas Venkataraghavan Biography

Srinivas Venkataraghavan is a former Indian cricketer who was active from 1965 to 1983. He was born on 21st April 1945 in Madras in British India. He is referred to as Venkat by the cricket fans. He was playing for county cricket for Derbyshire in England from 1973 to 1975. After his retirement he became an umpire.

 

He was an off spin bowler and was one of the famous spin bowlers of 1970s. He started to play international test matches from his age of 20. His test debut was on 27th February 1965 against Pakistan and his ODI debut was on 13th July 1974 against England. He took a place in the Tamil Nadu team from 1970 to 1985 and played for Derbyshire from 1973 – 1975 and for Madras team from 1963 to 1970.

 

From the year 1993 to 2004 he has served as an umpire for 73 test matches and 52 ODIs. He had played 57 Tests and 15 ODIs and has scored 748 runs in test matches and 54 runs in ODIs. He had grabbed 156 wickets in the Tests totally and 5 wickets in one day match. His best bowling was 8 wickets for 72 runs in test cricket.

 

He was a mechanical engineer by profession. He served as the captain of Indian team that participated in the 1975 and 1979 World Cup competitions. He retired from first class cricket in 1985. The Government of India honored him with Padma Shri award in 2003.

 

His umpiring debut in ODI was on 18th January 1993 between India and England and his Test umpiring started with the match between England and India at Kolkatta. He has served as an umpire in three World Cups in 1996, 1999 and 2003. He retired in January 2004.
