Srijato Biography

Srijato is a popular young Bengali poet of modern generation. Udanta Sawb Joker: All Those Flying Jokers – is his major work which won the prestigious Ananda Puroskar in 2004. The award is given by ABP Group to writers belonging to Bengali language. A journalist by profession he is also a lyricist associated with Bengali cinema. In 2014 he won Filmfare Awards East for Best Lyricist for the song - "Balir Shohor" from Mishawr Rawhoshyo. Srijato started publishing poems in the late 1990s and is currently one of the popular and active poets of Bengali poetry scene. Bandhobi Gach (2015), Kobita Somogro-I (2015), Andhakar Lekhaguchchha (2015) and Kobita Somogro II (2016) are his recent published works.

 

He was born in Kolkata in 1975 into a musical family. He is the grandson of the famous Hindustani vocalist, Tarapada Chakraborty. Pandit Manas Chakraborty of Kotali Gharana is his uncle. His mother Gaan Saraswati Srila Bandopadhyay is also a classical vocalist. Yet Srijato chose poetry as his passion. He graduated from Asuthosh College, Kolkata. He started his literary career in the 1990s.He also penned lyrics for a few Bengali films such as Ekla Akash, Namte Namte, Autograph, Chaplin, Shatru, Jaani Dyakha Hawbe etc.

 

Srijato currently lives in Selimpur, Kolkata. He is married to Durba. She once asked the poet to sign an autograph. Later she became his wife. Srijato has worked as a journalist. He now serves as an editor of the magazine "Prathama". In 2014 he hosted a musical show featuring legends of music for a Bengali channel. In 2015 Srijato became the first Bengali author to launch his own channel. He is to debut silver screen very soon with Srijit Mukherji's directorial venture - 'Zulfikar'.
