Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay Biography

Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay is a noted Bengali author from Mymensingh who migrated to West Bengal during partition. He has written numerous books for children, apart from other works. He has been a popular writer for many of Bengali directors. Many of his works have been adapted to silver screen by Bengali film directors like Tapan Sinha, Rituporno Ghosh, Haranath Chakraborty, Abhijit Choudhury etc. PatalGhor, short story "Dosar", Kaagajer Bau, Nabiganjer Daitto, Rwin, Ashchorjyo Prodeep, Chayamoy, Gosainbaganer Bhoot, Banshiwala and Sadhubabar Lathi were among those works which were made to films. His works are greatly influenced by the Hindu sub-sect of Thakur Anukulchandra.

 

He was born in Mymensingh (present day Bangladesh) in 1935. His family migrated to West Bengal after partition and settled there. His father worked in railways. So his childhood was spent at various parts of India like Bihar, West Bengal, Assam etc. He passed intermediate from the Victoria College, Koch Bihar. He took Master’s in Bengali from Calcutta University and started his career as a school teacher. He is retired right now and currently associated with literal magazine - Anandabazar Patrika at Kolkata and Bengali magazine Desh.

 

Comic books were released on his works - Bipinbabur Bipad and Nababganjer Agantuk. Apart from children’s works, he has also written thrillers. He started a series with detective Shabar Dasgupta in the lead. He discontinued it as it was not successful. Among his thriller works, Shada Beral and Kalo Beral are still popular. He has been a popular author for acclaimed film director Rituporno Ghosh who adapted his short story "Dosar" to B/W format, and his movie Hirer Angti too was based on Shirshendu’s novel with the same title. His work Nabiganjer Daitto was made to the feature film, Ajab Gayer Ajab Katha by great director Tapan Sinha.
