Shibram Chakraborty Biography

Shibram Chakraborty was a noted Bengali writer best known as a humorist. His satire works place his as a well-established humorist of the 20^th century. Associated with freedom struggle movement he was also known as a revolutionary. He wrote poems, plays, non-fiction and novels in Bengali literature. Though he was a celebrated writer throughout his life, born into a royal family, his last days were spent in penury. West Bengal government granted him a monthly allowance during his last days. This satirist who entertained millions through his unique use of pun, alliteration, play of words and ironic humour passed away in the year 1980.

Shibram was born in the year 1902 in Chanchal, Malda, West Bengal. He was born into a royal family of Chachal. His father was Shibprashad Chakrabarty. While Shibram was studying at school he got involved with freedom struggle movement. He took part in Swadesi movement, declared by Mahatma Gandhi. He got arrested and jailed and for the same reason he was disqualified for matriculation exams. Yet Shibram achieved knowledge by his own paths. He had a vast knowledge on a variety of subjects. He never married and was known as a "free spirit".

Though he contributed some outstanding works to Bengali literature, he never documented his works. For the majority of his time he lived in the second floor of a mess room on Muktaram Babu Street in Kolkata. He started his writing as a poet before moving to other genres of literature. Manush – was his first collection of published poems. He also wrote in many leading magazines and journals in those days. He often put himself into his stories amongst fictional characters, and places it in a humorous way. Ritwik Ghatak’s Bari Theke Paliye was based on one of his novels, inspired from the real happenings of his life when he ran away from his home.
