Shamili Biography

Shamili, earlier known as Baby Shamili is a south Indian actress, who has been very popular as a child artist during late 1980’s and early 1990’s. She is the younger sister of popular actress, Shalini who has been equally successful in child artist as well as leading heroine’s role. Tamil superstar, Ajith Kumar is her brother-in-law. Her elder brother, Richard Rishi is also a Tamil and Telugu actor. Though she has debut big screen in lead heroine role, she is still remembered for her child artist roles for movies like Malootty, Anjali, Pookkalam Varavayi and Durga. Her lead role as the mentally challenged child Anjali in Mani Ratnam’s Anjali fetched her National award for best child artist in the year 1990. Her debut Malayalam movie was Kamal’s Pookkalam Varavayi released in 1991 and her second movie, Malootty (1992) fetched her state award for best child actress.

 

She was born in 10 July 1987 in Chennai. When she was born, her elder sister, who was then known as Baby Shalini, was already an established child artist of south Indian film industry. So, expectations were high when Shamili was to debut silver screen in child artist role. She started her acting career at the age of 2 and when she earned National Film Award and State award for Best Child Artist in 1990 for the critically acclaimed movie, Anjali she was only three! Similar to her sister, she bagged a National award at the age of 3. Then Shamili went on to appear in numerous movies and audience loved her innocent smiles and acting skills.

 

She played the role of daughter of Devan-Rekha couple for her debut Malayalam movie, Pookkalam Varavai. But it was her second movie, Maalootty directed by Bharathan, which earned her critical appreciation as well as a state award. During teens, she appeared in movies like Harikrishnans, Nirnayam and Kandukondain Kandukondain and in 2000, she took a break from the industry to join later as lead heroine role. Though her debut movie, OY! (Telugu) was not a big success at box office, it earned her CineMAA Award for Best Female Debut.
