Shabbir Ali Biography

Shabbir Ali is a former football player of India, who currently serves as a team manager. He is a recipient of prestigious Dhyan Chand Award for the year 2011, for his outstanding contributions to Indian sports. Ali was the best Indian player in the 1970s and 1980s, and the finest striker of his time. Under his captaincy India won Asian Youth championships in Bangkok jointly with Iran in 1974 during his glorious age. He has been associated with many leading sports clubs of India such as Tata Sports Club in Mumbai, Kolkata Club in Kolkata, and finally Mohammedan and played a significant role in establishing this club as one among the major clubs of West Bengal, arch rivalries with Mohun Bagan A.C. and East Bengal F.C. These three clubs are together tagged as "Big Three Club".

 

This striker was born in Hyderabad in 26 January 1956, on a Republic day. His active career began in the 1970s and his glorious career ended with 1980s. He was a prolific goal scorer who scored for India at several international matches. He was also a top scorer at National level matches. With his win in Asian Youth championships in Bangkok in 1974 as a young captain, he stayed at no.1 position for a long time. He played with Tata Sports Club in Mumbai during his early years, followed by Calcutta club, East Bengal in the late 1970s followed by Mohammedan of Kolkata.

 

During the period 1972 – 1984, he was a default member of Indian team and has played captain’s role for Asian Youth, pre-Olympics, Nehru Cup, Merdeka and King's Cup tournaments. In the international matches, he has scored 35 goals, one of the best achievements of an Indian player. Since 1985 he is associated with football as a coach and has proved his caliber in this field too.
