Samaresh Majumdar Biography

Samaresh Majumdar is a contemporary Bengali writer known for his trilogy - Uttaradhikar, Kalbela and Kalpurush published in the late 1970’s. This trilogy is still remains one of the greatest works of Bangla literature. Garbhodharini and Shatkahon are other noted works. Many of his works have been made feature films in Bengali, like Kalimpong E Sitaharan and Buno Haansh. Through his works he created the fictional detective character Arjun which was made a feature film in 2013 titled - Arjun – Kalimpong E Sitaharan. He is one of the leading and inseparable names of Bangla literature all time. Apart from novels, a few of his works belong to children literature.

 

He was born in Jalpaiguri on 10 March 1942 and his childhood days were spent at tea gardens of Duars. His schooling was done at his hometown itself and later completed graduation from Scottish Church College in Kolkata. His first short story was published in the year 1967 in Desh literary magazine and his first novel was published in the year 1976. It was titled Dour, published in the magazine Desh. Thus started his literary career and this versatile writer is equally popular in Bengal and Bangladesh. His works also include suspense thrillers and are highly popular.

 

Through his works he has introduced a few immortal characters to Bengali readers which have become a part of their daily life. Detective character Arjun, Dipaboli of Saatkahon and Animesh & Madhabilata of his famous trilogy books need special mention. His most famous novel is Saatkahon. Ferari, Lighter, Bano Hansh, Ani, Kalapahar, Panchti Rohosyo Uponyas and Ora ebong oder maayera are other noted works. He received Sahitya Akademi Award in 1984 for Kalbela.
