Ramendra Kumar Biography

Ramendra Kumar is an Indian author associated with children’s books. He has also written a few translations, apart from satire, poetry, travelogues and fiction. He has published 22 books till now and has won 26 national awards in competitions organised for writers of children's books. Ramen's work has been published and reviewed in major newspapers and magazines and many of his works have been translated to many foreign languages including French, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese. His kid stories have been published for the popular 'Chicken Soup for the Soul Series’ too.

 

He was born and brought up in Hyderabad. He holds both Engineering and MBA degrees. Now he is settled in Rourkela with his family and employed at Steel Plant. His literal career began with satire and poetry works. He switched on to children’s tales when his little daughter prompted him to do so. Actually his 5 year old daughter asked him to give a story to recite at school. He wrote a story called ‘Just A Second’. He received good response from kids at assembly when he told the story. It was the new beginning. He published his first children’s book in the year 1997. Since then he has been associated with all leading publishing houses of the country and has done 22 works belonging to different genres.

 

He wrote his first poem while studying in class three and dreams to become a writer since his early childhood. He took writing seriously while at college. Fairy tales, fantasies, folk tales, fables and realistic fiction are his favourite subjects. He presented a paper at the IBBY World Congress held in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2008, a rare honour for an Indian writer.
