Rahman Abbas Biography

Rahman Abbas was born on 30 January 1972 is a writer from Mumbai. Rahman Abbas is basically a fiction writer who writes in Urdu and English. Abbas has master's degrees in Urdu and English literature from Mumbai University. Rahman Abbas's novels deal with themes of indirectly with politics and the theme of love. Currently Abbas has five novels to his credit and is the recipient of the National Award for Literature by the Universal Center for Peace and Research. It would be appropriate to say at this point that he is one of the many writers who have decided to return their awards.

Abbas's first Urdu novel, Nakhalistan Ki Talash was published in 2004 when he was only 24, which became a block buster especially among the Urdu readers and controvercial in literary circles and was proted to some extent by religious groups. The novel was all about a young Muslim who went on to join a Kashmiri terrorist organization in 1992 leading to what had happened in Mumbai in 1992. He openly displays his disappointment about the current hatred in politics of India today in no uncertain manner. Abbas was even arrested after his novel was published on various charges including obscenity. 

Abbas in one of his literary essays namely "Ekkiswin Sadi Men Urdu Novel aur Digar Mazameen" English Translation "Urdu Novel in Twenty First Century and Other Essay" had stated that as a young boy, he had been influenced by the Modernist movement and he had written various short stories published in the literary magazine Shabkhoon. Later, reading Latin American, Western, and African novels, especially the works of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, George Orwell, Victor Hugo, Milan Kundera, and Ben Okri and that played a major role in motivating him to write novels.

Abbas has thoroughly discussed about the changes that took place in him by the debates about two of his novels, Ek Mamnua Muhabbat Ki Kahani and Khuda Ke Saaye Mein Ankh Micholi, held on one of the Canada's Urdu TV channels.. He is one of the Sahitya Akademi Award winners in the year 2011 for his third novel Khuda Ke Saaye Mein Ankh Micholi.
