Raghuvir Sahay Biography

Raghuvir Sahay was a versatile writer, journalist and critic of Hindi in the 20th century. This prolific writer was also known as an editor, poet, short-story writer, essayist, literary critic, translator, and journalist. His poetry collection, Log Bhool Gaye Hain earned him Sahitya Akademi Award in Hindi for the year 1984. Atmahatya Ke Viruddh, Hanso Hanso Jaldi Hanso and Seedhiyon Par Dhoop Mein are his celebrated works. He was a well-known journalist who remained as the editor-in-chief for Hindi weekly, Dinmaan, during the period 1969–82. Famous TV News Reader of Doordarshan Manjari Joshi is his daughter and noted journalist and writer, Hemant Joshi is his son-in-law.

 

Apart from being a noted poet, short story writer and journalist, he served as an editor, translator and social commentator which made his works outstanding. Raghuvir Sahay was born in Lucknow in 1929. He was born in an era when Indians were struggling to gain freedom from British. He was influenced a lot by the works of Charles Dickens and a few Hindi writers like Premchand during the first phase of writing career. His intense desire to bring changes to the world using pen, prompted Sahay to start writing. Very soon he chose journalism as his career.

 

He started off as the sub-editor of news section of AIR and later worked as a special correspondent for 'Navabharat' times. Finally he became the chief editor of Dinmaan, a post he served for a long time. His contribution as a freedom writer during 1972-90 is still appreciated by millions. Compassion and irony are the best two words that describe his poems. Sahay was an active campaigner of Hindustani language and was one among the members of Nayi kahani Movement in Hindi Literature during the 20th century.
