Perumbadavam Sreedharan Biography

Perumbadavam Sreedharan is one of the most popular writers of Malayalam in modern literature. He is most known for his short stories and novels. Among all his works, Oru sangeerthanam pole is regarded as the classic work of Malayalam which holds the record of bestseller of Malayalam literature till now. This book has been republished many times due to public demand and till now, it has sold over 100,000 copies in about 12 years. This classic novel was first published in the year 1993 and released in its 37th edition on 1 November 2008 after setting publishing records in 2005. It is a true story based on the life of famous Russian writer, Fyodor Dostoyevsky and his wife Anna. The novel travels through different phases of Dostoyevsky’s life, his gambling experiences, his relationship with Anna who was much younger than her and strong bond of relationship that emerged between the two. It’s always regarded as one of the finest novels of Malayalam for its literary touch as well as narration of untold love and finally its expression, touching the reader’s soul. He won the Vayalar Award for this most popular novel of Malayalam literature. He is the present Chairman of Kerala Sahithya Academy.

Sreedharan was born in Perumbadavam of Ernakulam district, Kerala. He is usually called by this place name. He started his career by writing poems, later shifted to short stories and novels. He has a distinct writing style and his works have a philosophical touch. His writings often describe different statuses of minds and its thoughts. He often peeps to the darkest corridors of human minds and its unknown pains and sufferings through his prolific writing skill.

Perumbadavam has also written the scripts of 12 Malayalam films and he won Kerala state awards for the script of Sooryadanam (1989). His work – Ente hridayathinte udame has become an offbeat movie of Malayalam. Among his works, Pradakshina Vazhy also needs special mention. This novel takes you to a ride through unknown spaces of human mind and he expressed the thoughts of a woman with perfection through this novel. His most popular works are Vaalmunayil Vachacha Manassu, Ottachilanka, Narayaneeyam, Dhoorangal Kadannu, Iruttil Parakkunna Pakshi, Anthiveyilile ponnu, Venanil Pookunna Maram, Ninte Koodarathinarike , Ashtapathi, Kadal pole kadal, Kripanidiyude Kottaram, Ilathumbukalile Mazha and Sooryadaham.
