P. V. Thampi Biography

P. Vasudevan Thampi, better known as P. V. Thampi was a prominent writer and novelist of Malayalam literature known for writing ghost stories. He is the author of Krishnaparunthu, the most popular tantric novel read by Malayalis. The novel was also made into a film with the same title, with Mohanlal playing the lead role. Thampi scripted the movie and wrote its dialogues as well. The movie was directed by A. Vincent. P. V. Thampi was a popular novelist, essayist, journalist and speaker. A well-known lawyer, he also served as the editor-publisher of The Weekly Kerala, published in 1957, a magazine far ahead of its times. He passed away on January 30, 2006.

His full name is P. Vasudevan Thampi. He was born in Harippad, a town in Alappuzha District on April 28, 1937. He was born as the son of P. Krishna Pillai and Bhavani Thankachi. Noted film director, poet and lyricist Sreekumaran Thampi is his younger brother. Thampi became popular as a young writer at a very young age. At the age of 19, he got job at New India Insurance Company. He completed post-graduation in History and LLB while in service. At the same time he was associated with his writings as well. When he felt his job will block his creativity, he resigned his post to give more time to writing.

His first novel, Homam received Kumkumam award in 1979. In 1988 his non-fiction work on Soviet Union in English earned him international fame and won Soviet Union Award for Best Prose. Karmabandham, Bhraanthi, Atma Vritham, Ticket Please, Agnirati, Krishna Parunth, Avataram, Anantha Bhairavi, Kasturi, Palli Vetta (in two volumes) and Sapthaham are his published works. Krishna Parunth- has been translated to Hindi and Tamil.
