Om Prakash Sharma Biography

Om Prakash Sharma is recognized as one of the most talented writers of detective fiction in Hindi after and has more than 450 Hindi detective and social novels to his credit. He was born in a brahimin family of Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh. He later moved to Delhi and worked with. He was employed with the Delhi Cloth Mill. He was employed with the Delhi Cloth Mill (DCM) and lived in a rented house but came back to settle in Meerut and started writing and later established his own publication house Janpriya Publication.

Some of his very famous works consist of Sanjh Ka Suraj, Phir Aya Tufan, Nili Ghori Ka Sawar, Pishach Sundari, Dusra Taj Mahal, Apne Desh Ka Ajnabi, along with detective novels, he wrote books having historical and social values' It would be appropirate to mention here that his first novel was 'Saanjh Ka Sooraj' based on the revolution period of last Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar.

Om Prakash Sharma was an avid fan of Sharat Chandra Chatterji's writing style and the characters from Sharat Chand's books fascinated and inspired him to great extent. Om Prakash Sharma was more popular for his detective novel writing but he had written class literary, quality contemporary and historical literature and poetry also. Incidentally, it will be worth mentioning he joined the Indian Freedom Struggle and was jailed twice by the then British rulers for his involvement in the freedom movement. 

It would be worth mentioning here that noted film financer, Satyen Pal Chaudhary who belonged to Meerut (Financer of producer Prakash Mehra) decided to make a film based on Sharma's novel Dhadkan and invited him to Mumbai but he denied although permitted to make film since the film was being directed by Basu Chatterjee one of his highly admired directors.

Later Basu Chatterjee came to Meerut personally and narrated him the screenplay. The feature film Chameli Ki Shaadi with Anil Kapoor in the lead role was made based on his novel and became very popular. He died on 14 October 1998 after prolonged illness.
