Niranjan Mukundan Biography

Niranjan Mukundan is an Indian para-swimmer who was crowned as the Junior World Champion in the year 2015. He won international medals at the IWAS World Junior Games in Puerto Rico in 2013, IWAS World Junior Games in Stoke Mandeville, U.K in 2014, IWAS Junior World Games in Prague, Czech Republic in 2016 and many more medals. Niranjan was given the prestigious Ekalavya award in 2016. National Award for Best Sports-person of the Year by Government of India in 2015 and Achiever’s Award 2015 from Dr. Chenraj Roychand, founding Chairman of The JGI Group are the major honours received by him, after being crowned as the Junior World Champion in the year 2015.

 

Niranjan Mukundan was born on 4 September 1994 in Bangalore, Karnataka. He was born with the birth defect, spina bifida in which he had an incomplete development of the spinal cord and clubbed feet. He completed his studies from Jain University in Bangalore. Since young, he got drawn towards swimming, and he learnt it with the support of parents. He learnt swimming quickly. His professional career began in the first half of 2000s as a child athlete.

 

He claimed his first medal at Paralympic nationals in Mumbai, 2004–2005 at the age of 10, when he got the silver medal in 50m butterfly event. He earned silver medal for the second time the following year in the same event held at Kolkata. It was the beginning of the glorious career of Niranjan as an athlete, who later claimed many international medals. His career reached the peak during 2012-2015 period, when he won many international medals for team India, the biggest achievement being the Junior World Champion in the year 2015.
