Navjeet Kaur Dhillon Biography

Navjeet Kaur Dhillon, also known as Navjeet Dhillon is an Indian female athlete associated with discus throw. She represents India at different international games, and most recently clinched bronze at Common wealth games 2018. Navjeet threw 57.43m in her sixth and last attempt to claim bronze medal, and is one of her best performances up-to-date. Thus she along with Seema Punia became the first athlete to win medals in ongoing CWG held at Australia. The 23-year-old discus thrower had won a bronze in the World Junior Championship in 2014 and became the second Indian to do so.

Navjeet Dhillon was born on 6th March 1995 into a family of sportsmen. She hails from Amritsar, Punjab. Her brother Jasdeep is a shot-putter. Kaur’s mother Kuldeep is an Asian Games medalist in hockey, and her father Jaspal Singh supports them. She came to limelight when she won a bronze medal at World Junior Championship held at Eugene, USA in 2014. She is only the second Indian player to reach this destination, after Seema Anthil in 2002. She won it at the age of 19, while she was the reigning champion at inter-university championship. One month prior to her historic win at World Junior Championship, she had won a silver medal in the Asian junior meet, opened with a personal best heave of 54.08m. Navjeet's previous best was 53.97m while winning the Junior Federation Cup at Chennai held a few months ago.

But later she failed to meet with expectations while doing international tournaments. Yet she performed well in domestic circuit. Her graduation to the next level was not as smooth as one would expect, and her performance began plateauing. Though she made it big at 2014 Juniors’ campionship, she couldn’t find enough sponsors as she expected, and everything remained the same. Her brother was once deemed as a promising thrower, but later he couldn’t get enough support or sponsors and he had to stop it mid-way before he started off once again from scratch.
