Nanjil Nadan Biography

Nanjil Nadan is the pen name of G. Subramaniam, a noted writer of Tamil literature. Nanjil Nadan, literally means - a native of the Nanjil Nadu (a region of Tamil Nadu). His works include novels, poetry as well as short stories. His poetry collection was published titled, Manullipambu. Nanjil Nattu Vellalar Vazhkai – is his single non-fiction work. Thalaikeezh vigithangal, Mamisapadaippu,   Enbiladanai veyilkayum, Midhavai, Ettuthikkum madhayaanai and Sadhuranga Kuthiraigal are his published novels. His short story collections are Deivangal adugal onaigal, Koambai, Vakkuporukkigal, Uppu, Peikkottu, Soodiya poo sodarka and Prandhu. He currently works at W. H. Brady and Co in Coimbatore.

 

Nanjil Nadan was born in Veera Narayanamangalam in Kanyakumari District on December 31, 1947. His parents are Ganapathiya Pillai and Saraswathi Ammal. He chose Nanhil Nadan as his pseudonym to write literary pieces. Agastheeswaram and Thovalai of KK district are together known as Nanhil Nadu. Post-graduation in mathematics is his educational qualification. He began his literary career in association with Tamil Sangam's literary magazine Aedu at Mumbai. His first short story Viradham was published in 1975 in the magazine Deepam. After that he has published 6 novels, 112 short stories, 2 short story anthologies, 5 essay collections and 2 poetry collections in Tamil.

 

In 2002, his novel Thalaikeezh Vigithangal was adopted for a Tamil film titled Solla Marandha Kadhai by Thangar Bachan. His novel Ettu Thikkum Madha Yaanai is being made into a Tamil film titled Padithurai. In 2010 he received the Sahitya Akademi Award for Tamil for his short story collection Soodiya poo soodarka. His novel, Sathuranga Kudhirai won Government of Tamil Nadu literary award for best novel. Viradham received Ilakkiya Sinthanai Award and 'Nathiyin Pizhaiyandru Narumpunal Inmai' was awarded with Non-Fiction award from The Tamil Literary Garden, Canada.
