Mrinal Chatterjee Biography

Mrinal Chatterjee is an Odia writer, professor and media educator & trainer. He is also a journalist and leading columnist of Odia language. Currently he serves as the head of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Dhenkanal and a professor too. He has gained popularity as a fictional writer in the recent times. History of Journalism in Odisha, Jagate Thiba Jate Dina, Kandhei, Glossary of Terms for Media Persons, Eka Sundar Chandini Ratire, Yamraj Chutire etc are among his published works. Yamraj Number 5003 is the Assamese translation of his very popular work, Yamraj Chutire released in 2016. As a journalist and editor, he mostly wrote on topics related to environment.

A very popular figure of Odia fiction right now, he has published more than 10 novels, 7 short story collections and a series of columns in Odia dailies. He also published 5 books on journalism and mass communication in Odia. He is the author of very famous non-fiction book on Odia journalism, History of Journalism in Odisha, which describes the journey of journalism in the state from mid-19th century to mid-2013. It is the first major publication on history of journalism in Odisha.

Professor Dr. Mrinal Chatterjee was born on 10 February 1961 in Katwa, Bardhaman district, West Bengal. His education was completed at Berhampur University, Utkal University and Guru Jambheshwar University. He started his career as a lecturer in English in 1983. As a journalist he started his career in 1984, when he joined as sub-editor of Sambad, an Odia daily. Later he became Edition-in-Charge of Sambad's North Odisha edition in 1996. He joined IIMC, Dhenkanl as Associate Professor in 1999, and has been associated with it till now. He currently serves as the head of the department, and a professor too.
