Mahesh Gawli Biography

Mahesh Gawli is an Indian football player who is playing in the Indian National Football team since 1997. He is an efficient defender. He started playing football when he was just 8 years old. He was born on 23rd January 1980 in Tamzorconi in Goa. When he was studying at Assumpta High School he was a part of the school football team as a midfielder.

 

He was selected for Goa under – 12 football team and was the part of the team that played and won against Japan under – 12. He was selected for the Sports Authority of India Camp. His position was changed to central defense by his coach Mr. Nagi. Nagi has a great part in creating a taste for football in him.

 

He played for All Goa XI team and impressed TATA Football Academy. He spent four years here and was coached by Mohamed Habib and Ranjan Chaudhary. His talent and skills fetched him a place in the under – 16 Indian squad and then in under – 19 Indian team. He took part in the Asian Youth Championship. He is the only one to be named in the Asian All Star under – 16 team.

 

His club football debut was with FC Cochin and later he left to join Churchill Brothers Club in 2000. After three years, he joined Kingfisher East Bengal Club and helped it to win in the Asian Club Championship 2003. He joined Mahindra United in 2005 and got three Defender of the Year awards in succession. He joined Dempo Club in 2006 and success embraced him after that. The team reached semifinal of AFC Cup 2008.

 

He has been a part of the Indian Football team from 2007. He is in the center back position and played in many tournaments that include LG Cup in which India won. He received Man of the Match award in the final match against Syria of Nehru Cup International Football Tournament 2007.
