Lakshmi Thiripurasundari Biography

Lakshmi Thiripurasundari was a noted writer associated with Tamil literature. She lived during the period, 21 March 1921 - 7 January 1987. She was a recipient of Sahitya Academy Award 1984 for her novle, Oru Kaveriyai pola. Her work, Penn manam and Mithila Vilas earned Tamil Valarchi Kazhagam award. This prolific fiction writer published hundreds of short stories and novels. She took to full-time writing in 1977 and died in 1987. She was a doctor by profession. She used the pen name, Lakshmi for her works. S. Thiripurasundari is her real name. Srinivasan Thiripurasundari is the expansion of initials.

S. Thiripurasundari was born on 21 March 1921 in Thottiyam, Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu. Dr. Srinivasan and Pattammal were her parents. She completed her medical studies from Stanley Medical College and started her career as a medical practitioner at Chennai. Since her college days she started publishing short stories in Ananda Vikatan using pseudonym “Lakshmi”, which she continued throughout her life. Thagunda thandanaya? was the first published short story, and Bhavani, her first published novel.

She got married in 1955 and moved to South Africa, where she lived for the next twenty two years. Though her husband Kannabiran passed away in 1966, she stayed there. She returned to India in 1977, and after that she dedicated her full time for writing for the next 10 years she lived. She passed away on 7 January 1987 aged 65. Some of her major works include - Oru kaaviriyai pola, Adutha Veedu, Kashmir Katthi, Mithila Vilas, Nathimulam, Nirka Neram Illai and Urimai Urangukirathu. During her lifetime, she was a recipient of some of the major literal awards.
