Krishna Poonia Biography
Krishna Poonia is an Indian sportswoman excelling in the game of discus throw who got a chance to represent India in the 2008 London Olympics. She was shot into limelight after winning the Delhi Commonwealth Games on 11th October 2010. She belongs to Jat family and was born on 5th May 1982 in Hisar District of Haryana.
She got her graduation in Sociology from Kanodia Girls College in Jaipur. She married Virender Singh Poonia, a former athlete of Gagarwas village in Churu district in Rajasthan in 2000. Both of them are working for Indian Railways and are living in Jaipur. They have a son.
She took part in Doha Asian Games and won bronze medal. She won gold medal in 46th Open National athletics. She also participated at the 2008 Beijing Olympics but could get only 10th place in the qualifying round with 58.23 meters. Her best score was 64.76 meters on 8th May 2012 at Hawai, USA and this was a new national record.
She became the first Indian sportswoman to win the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2010 in the discus throw event held at New Delhi. She was presented with the cash award by the Government of Rajasthan.
She received Maharana Pratap award from Government of Rajasthan, Bhim award from Government of Haryana, Arjuna Award in 2010 and Padma Shri award in 2011 from the Government of India in recognition of her talents.
