Krishna Chandra Sharma Biography

Krishna Chandra Sharma was an Indian radio broadcaster, novelist and author who served as the Director General of All India Radio from 1980 to 1981. He has authored many novels and published more than 20 books throughout his lifetime. He joined AIR as a program executive in the 1950s and rose to the highest post as the Director General in the early 1980s, after spending around 25 years in the broadcasting field. Sharma died of brain haemorrhage on 29 September 2003, a couple of weeks before he turned 80. He was a recipient of Shalaka Samman.

Krishna Chandra Sharma was nicknamed as Bhikkhu. Sharma was born on 12 October 1923 in Kankhal, Haridwar. Currently his birthplace belongs to Uttarakhand. He spent his childhood days in his hometown, where he completed his schooling. For graduation he moved to Benaras where he completed his Master’s degree and LLB. He studied Hindi under renowned teachers like Hazari Prasad Dwivedi, Ram Chandra Shukla, Nand Dulare Bajpai etc. He also studied Pali language and Buddhism. Among his renowned teachers, Nand Dulare Bajpai encouraged him to write, and stay patience to gain success. He also encouraged him to read a lot of books.

Krishna Chandra Sharma joined AIR as a program executive in the 1950s. He married Shakuntala Sharma in 1953 and has one daughter. Till his retirement he had a long term relationship with AIR. He co-authored Hindi language’s first trilogy - Naag Phani, Revati and Chandanvan Ki Aag. Maut Ki Sarai is yet another major work. His collection of short stories includes - Kala Paththar, Mrityu Ki Minaar and Bela Phule Aadhi Raat. He was honoured by the Delhi Sahitya Akademi in 1997.
